Where will you live, should you move to a smaller house, will you have enough money, where should you invest it, should you stay with your children, should you go to an old age home, is this country safe..?

These are the worries of the hensioners. It’s no fun to be a burden to your family when you grow old, but LONLINESS and boredom are serious problems faced by the elderly. Hens can help!

Henpower in the UK, encourages older people to get involved in hen keeping as a way of:

β€’ reducing isolation
β€’ increasing health and wellbeing.
β€’ Preventing lonelines
β€’ Providing seniors with socialization
β€’ Encouraging seniors to be creative by designing coops and purchasing and showing rare hen breeds.
β€’ Creates inter-generational exchanges by visiting school children.
β€’ Helping to lift the spirits of other seniors by visiting care homes with their hens.
β€’ Encouraging activity and maintaining fitness levels.
If you have 7 minutes to spare have a look at this cute video of The Hen Men

Perhaps I can start something like this here in George? I always enjoy a good HEN PARTY *Giggle*

“Caring for seniors is perhaps the greatest responsibility we have. Those who have walked before us have given so much and made possible the life we all enjoy” – Senator John Hoeven

πŸ“ I am privileged to look after my 90-year-old mother right here on the farm. I make sure there is a constant flow of people and animals in her cottage.

πŸ₯šI have often caught her feeding bread to a hen with new babies. The smile on her beautiful, crinkly face says it all πŸ₯š

We have SLIGHTLY “OLDER” BIRDS 🀣 in stock that are nice and BIG. Order a BIG chicken here!

Hello to you all!

What does COP26 stand for? The conference is officially called the United Nations Climate Change Conference Of the Parties, and this is the 26th iteration. Since the full name is something of a mouthful, it is shortened to COP26.

For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for β€˜Conference of the Parties’. In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority.

β€œTo restore stability to our planet, therefore, we must restore its biodiversity, the very thing we have removed. It is the only way out of this crisis that we ourselves have created.
We must rewild the world!”
~Sir David Attenborough

❓ Can our Global leaders really make a difference? Can we all work together for the sake of humanity? I truly hope so!

πŸ₯΅ My Brother In Law just came back from a camping trip in Botswana where he said that they experienced temperatures of 50 degrees plus, and its not even summer yet.

πŸ”₯ I was just wondering what it would be like to try and grow chickens and eggs if the temperatures reach that high. The simple answer is that we wouldn’t be able to grow free-range chickens! They would need to be housed with air-conditioning!! Scary thought. πŸ”₯

So while we wait to see if our world leaders can cooperate, here are our RED HOT SPECIALS for the week…

Lindy and the Red Barn Team.

Hello to you all!

It’s our Heritage – to Braai and Braai and braai some more. There is just nothing better than the smell of meat on the fire. πŸ”₯

This Friday is Our Special Heritage Day. It is the day that South Africans celebrate the diversity of their beliefs and traditions.

With everyone at odds with each other about vaccines and more, perhaps we need to celebrate our differences and be kind and respectful to each other.

free range chicken sausage

Hello Everyone!

Often, sausages are associated with, SCRAPS, floor-sweepings, leftovers and much, much worse! I grew up loving Vienna’s (as we all did!) I now know how those things are made. Eish, scary.

So the sausage, through the ages, got a deservedly bad rap. You can hide a lot of yukkie stuff in sausage and make it taste AWESOME.

Because “this little sausage”, ME, loves sausages, Red Barn now makes sausages from the best and most expensive part of the chicken, the BREAST fillet ONLY.

My next all-time, standby, favorite is, of course, our Chicken Burgers. Also made with Breast Fillets.

You have put your trust in us and we are so grateful. Burgers and Sausages on special this week.

Free range chicken red barn farm

Hello to you all!

As we go into this NEW Year, just bear with me for a second, because I am feeling so many wonderful emotions! I have been writing to you for nearly 9 years now, EVERY week! So I am indulging myself. It is the time to reminisce, I am sitting here listening to Cat Stevens – “I love my dog” and Norah Jones “Cold, Cold Heart’ so you see I am really in the past for just a moment or two.

Know what I am thinking? I am so, so blessed.

The business I created on sheer belief in my love of animals and complete dedication to changing the way farm animals are treated, turned out to be the best thing I ever did in my life.

Your support for Red Barn has just astounded me at every turn. Can you imagine how I felt being nominated for Female Farmer of the Year? I didn’t need to win, just to meet other strong women and seeing what they do, was incredible. YOU, my loyal supporters made this possible.Β  THANK YOU!

YOU also made it possible for me to go on a family reunion this year with my children (above) and all my grandchildren. It was truly amazing, unforgettable.

If I can support my family from my little enterprise, then, others can too.
2020 is my year to share all my experience, and I am going to do it!
Change conditions for farm animals, one farmer at a time.

Thank you for listening, and Happy New Year.

Hello Everyone!

What a great idea, *giggle*

We can get all “Christmassy” with homemade egg candles while we endure yet more load-shedding.

It is SO unfortunate that load-shedding has returned as the tourists arrive in our beautiful country.Β  At the moment we are experiencing Stage 4 which means our power is off 3 times per day for 2.5 hours.

As you can imagine, it is really difficult on a farm without electricity. Baby chickens under lights, processing machinery etc. Even our water system needs power!

Luckily, I invested in a BIG generator last year! The 50KW Cummins diesel engine starts automatically and hums along merrily when needed. What a blessing, HER name is “Sparky”

It’s a huge extra expense, but we have to use it, or you won’t be eating our spectacular products this Xmas and New Year.

So let’s enjoy the warmth and atmosphere of our candles, hunker down in the darkness and pray that the power system is soon restored.

In the meantime, we have some great specials this week.

We can always braai by candlelight. nΓͺ?

Hello Everyone!

Here in South Africa we are not too involved with Halloween it seems.

In Canada and London, where my grandchildren live, it is a huge thing.Β  I have been hearing about their outfits for weeks!

I suppose it is fun to scare yourself to death every now and then?

“When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, β€˜tis near Halloween.”

This week we are offering you a Halloween SPECIAL. Less 10 percent on EVERYTHING!

Just use the coupon code BOO on the first page of the checkout!

NEW this week

Our Dry Cured Bacon.Β  It differs from our normal bacon in that it is not cured in brine, therefore it does not retain water.Β  It is also VERY thinly sliced. It is absolutely stunning!Β  It is made for us by Peter who makes the gluten free pasta.

Prince Albert Olive Oil. This mild and delicious Olive Oil comes in a gorgeous tin! Local is lekker.

Lamb Mince – sourced right here in George. Really great tasting mince. (free range of course)
